TMM FUNCTIONS—Instructor's Guide Life-Style: What can you do? (1-2)
This lesson makes use of a video clip, which can be found at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YLgqOONnJM
Alternatively, go to www.youtube.com and search for “Real English Lesson 15 - Can (What can you do?)”
<Objective> (1 to 3 minutes) If your students are very low-level, you might want to review some grammar. The lesson focuses on the modal auxiliary 'can' and 'cannot' ('can't').
<Warm Up> (5 minutes) Elicit the names of instruments from students. You could teach others as well. Explain any that they don't know.
<First Listening> (4 to 5 minutes) The video is divided into three parts which increase in difficulty. You may want to stop at the end of each part to discuss what they heard.
<Second Listening> (5 to 7 minutes) Read the directions to the students. You may want to pause the video for a moment after each section, just to give them a chance to get caught up or ask questions. If many students have not been able to fill in most of their chart, play the audio again. You may want to pre-teach vocabulary:
<Third Listening> (4 to 5 minutes) Read through the instructions, then give the students a moment to look at the questions. You should not need to pause the audio as they complete the activity. If many students have not been able to answer the questions, play the audio again.
Instructions: Get students to refer to the charts that they did during the second listening. Make sure they speak in full sentences (and that they don't simply give the person's name).
